I was trying to get Lirc to work and tried multiple variants, with the
MacPorts version at least getting installed correctly and I didn't have
weird compiler issues like I did with other Mac versions of Lirc.

I know that my hardware works ok because I was able to use it with Bengt
Martensson's IRscruitinizer app and I could capture and send IR signals and
get the raw codes put into a Lirc remote config file.

But Lirc would just always fail with "failed to initialize hardware" no
matter what...whether I was trying to do an IRrecord or IRsend.

I tried it with the IRdroid that I bought about a year ago (had v225
firmware) and then recently with an IRToy v2. Both gave me "failed to init
hardware" even when using the correct /dev port.

Anyways, I kind of gave up after many hours of disappointment. But I'd be
willing to try again if there was some good chance of success.

For various reasons, I am on macOS Sierra and cannot upgrade to anything
higher at the moment without breaking a bunch of things and apps. Just
wanted to let you know on that.

Anyways, I'd be willing to try further with your help and see where it
could go.
