Anyway, gpicp uses libSDL and it is widely available.
I am sure libSDL is in Debian repository.

I myself am playing with Puppy Linux for some time and I have
no problems to build the programs related to PICs (including
gputils, gpsim, sdcc and pk2cmd) under Puppy Linux.
