Agree with Russell, smell, smoke, shriek, flame, and bang.

A 12C509 controlling quartz halogen lamps through a couple of MOSFETs
was where I hit this, in late 1998.  I think PIClist was involved, and
some of you may remember the project.

On the schematic D2 was added to prevent C1 and potentially C2 from
discharging when the lamps turned on.  C2 was tantalum, old stock from
1977 or so.

I've got the previous revisions of the schematic on screen here, and
can see how I got it wrong to begin with.  Good learning.

Have avoided tantalum since.

Next question is how to dispose of old stock of tantalum capacitors?
