At first the behavior you describe suggests brown-out due to higher 
current consumption, but I don't know if the current consumption when 
operated by the PIC would be different than when operated by the button.

But the weird behavior related to position suggests that stray currents 
may be being induced by the RF field itself.

You could try shielding the PCB and the PIC with aluminum or copper 
foil, with the foil being grounded at a single point on the PCB.
