In the 1980s, we used VU meters Dixson (like these:

) in broadcast audio mixers (

). As I recall, we paid $50 each for them. At one point, Dixson stopped
making them and had a customer who needed more. They bought our surplus
inventory.

I imagine there was a lot of hand assembly involved in these, and that has
gotten very expensive. Today, it's probably cheaper to use a graphic
display and a microcontroller to emulate a VU meter.
