There's also load voltage sensing, where your micro is looking at the difference in voltage between the supply point and the load point using a spare cable core that does not carry any current. Takes a bit of calibrating and may be exposed to interference, but is quite passive otherwise. Not suitable for loads that are immediately adjacent to their supply.
