Continuation to slow Properties.load()

I discovered something else regarding my last message on this subject:
that single-byte reads are only part of the problem.  I've also discovered
that my filesystem driver is getting its init() method called for each
readBytes call.  I solved this, however, by doing a check at the start of
this method.
