Bryan, I had to pass your questions to our hardware designer as they were out of my jurisdiction. However... ...he suggested an inadequate power supply could be the cause of the problem. Sure enough, changing the supply does seem to sort it out. I then moved the library init to a different constructor and tried the dodgy supply again. The application fell over again but at a different point in the start-up, where it tries to init the quarter VGA display. This seems to prove that the supply really is the culprit.
