AFAIK no. How would you know where the first bit was? The start bit
indicates where the receiver should start to read the bits, without it the
receiver would not have any indication if a transmission was even in
progress or not. Remember there is no clock with RS232, it's up to the
receiver to wait and sample the line at specific times, it's the start bit
that starts this timer off.
