RE: Mac OS X and TINI

Since you are talking to the TINI, and just can't reset it, it looks like
there's a problem with the DTR line. There's a few places to check.

1) There's a jumper on the E20 to disable it, make sure it's enabled. I
don't know if there is one on the Vinculum board.

2) The DTR line is a separate wire in the serial cable connected to pin 4.
Make sure that the cable you are using has this connected. sometimes cables
built for specific uses don't use all the pins.

3) Some really low cost USB-Serial dongles don't implement DTR.

Well I asked a while ago, and received a couple of pointers, but still
no joy getting the Mac talking to the TINI; I hit an obstacle and go
and do something else for a while, then come back to it.

Here is what I have:

I have an E20 board and a 1MB 390 TINI, a Vinculum and a 1BM 390 TINI
and several iButtons, etc. I have a Mac running 10.2 with JDK 1.4.1 and
have RXTX installed. The docs for tini 1.12 state I need to be part of
the lock group as well as the UUCP group for RXTX to work, but trying
to add my username to lock fails. This might be a red herring...

The JDK works, as does the USB serial device - A Belkin F5U109 with the
OS 10 beta driver - as I have successfully run Lejos using
/dev/tty/USB\ Serial as the connection device, which uses RXTX, so I am
assuming that this works too.

Here is the problem. I plug the TINI into the E20, add a serial cable
to my USB serial convertor, turn on the power and run JavaKit using the
following command from the Terminal window:

java -classpath bin/tini.jar JavaKit &

JavaKit appears to run OK, and I choose /dev/tty.USB Serial and click
Open Port. This goes OK, with flashing lights on the convertor.
Powering up the TINI board gives me the following:

For the Vinculum board, connecting and powering up gives the same.
However, when I do the reset to get the loader working, as per the
instructions, I get this from both boards:

I have both a standard serial cable - the one that came with the Lego
Serial Tower - and a Male to Female Serial Cable, as the Vinculum has
the "other " kind of serial port on it. As I am getting the text out,
but not getting a response from the reset, I would appreciate some
guidance. Is it the cables? Is the ominous message about external
serial ports not being enabled, something to do with it? Am I missing
something bloody stupid?
