Serial port speed

Hi,
Im new in the embedded world and i don't understand too much about
communication speed etc etc...
Im still waiting for the developing kit, but im already testing my java
application. Im using the PC to simulate the Tini board (Serial to Serial)
using HyperTerminal. With a timeout in the serial port(115200bds) to read
bytes of 2 seconds, i just can send through the hyperterminal 56/57 characters
, i questioned my self when i get the Tini Board if it will be slower, since
my PC is far better than the Tini Board.
The problem is related with the windows by itself or applications in java
are slower by nature?
Is there a solution to speed up the communication?
