Modifying serial behavior

We have a custom Carrier board with a 485 interface on COM2, To make this easy to use I am trying to extend the TINISerialPort and SerialOutputStream classes to auto flip the RTS line on outputstream.write's. I am having problems however because all the SerialPort variable are declared private and can only be accessed from inside their package. As I understand it the package is build into Slush, is this correct? So to extend the serial port behavior do I need to rebuild Slush?
