Really depends on what your doing. You can't toggle a port line faster than a couple MS in Java, but you can sure develop code fast, especially networking code. Plus you can achieve high speed IO in a Java enviornment if you don't mind writing a little 8051 assembly(native drivers). I've got a lot of gripes about the current state of the OS, but all in all, it is one of the best out there(it's no embedded Linux, but what is). I'd stick with Java.
