out of memory!

Hi, I'm running a tini 400 reference board, I have a java application running in sram along with slush from flash. I'm trying to create a 64K byte buffer(a buffer of type "byte"), but I get an out of memory error. What is puzzling is that I do a TINIOS.getFreeRAM() just before trying to create the buffer, and it says I have 730 K bytes available. Any ideas? Is there a way to have an idea how much heap space is available at any given time?
