Dear Bob - By now, you may have accessed Bob Hinton's house to get a "taste" of what can be done with 1-Wire and a TINI Web Server, from the off-list email that I sent you... Even the "memory module" that you suggest is a iButton DS1996 64kbit EEPROM RAM with XML storage to "identify" the 1-Wire device by location. Bob Hinton was very helpful (he did the bulk of the House Monitor Java code) in getting me up and running, and I helped contribute some extra goodies (including more documentation). For a bit of background, the TINI's main purpose is to poll for 1-wire alarms and generate e-mail alerts that can be relayed to my mobile phone when anyone is out (e.g doors opening, excessive temperatures etc). The sort of events it will send can be seen from the output of the HTML/WML house event servlet below (excluding the "Monitor" event), though I did also exclude the "bell push" event since getting a text message to tell you that someone has pressed the door-bell when you're 100 miles away is novel but useless and rapidly gets annoying... as well as the PIR motion detector! I got to wondering if there might be a solution to another problem that I have. I am proposing to have 50 motion detectors scattered about a warehouse and control the lights from a central location based on where there is movement. The motion detectors just supply 10v to a line to signal motion. Rather than having 50 lines to monitor I would like to give them addresses and monitor 1 line (1-wire?). Is there some kind of a 1-wire device that I could put on the line that would send out an address when activated? or are 1-wire devices only polled? If polled any idea how long it would take to poll 50 (assuming most wouldn't answer because no movement)? Or could I use a memory module and have motion store a value in a set location and then read that location remotely? (Just thought of this idea) Thoughts?
