Walter,

The iButton must be inserted so that the flange is up (away from the 
board).  If it is inserted backwards, it will short the 1-Wire bus 
across the internal diode and make all devices unreadable.  If the 
DS2502 is unreadable, no Ethernet MAC ID will be found and no networking 
will be possible.
