When you say you are now running in external RAM, how did you accomplish 
this? Did you change the board jumper settings and CS register 
programming to move external RAM to the same address that external flash 
used to be at, or did you keep the memory settings the same and just 
relink the program to run out fo External RAM? If you did the second, 
then most likely, you have not correctly placed the vector table, and 
the first time an exception occurs, you are jumping through a vector 
table full of garbage, thus causing your exception.

Tell us what you memory looks like and where you have linked the program 
both in external flash when it works, and in external RAM when it does not.
