I got an email from Wendy Carson at Macraigor who figures that it was an
error that the datasheet stated that the MPC500 series were compatible
with the USB2Sprite:

to ship Sprites for BDM (ie MPC8xx and MPC5xx). The Sprite for "COP" will
not work because this is designed for CPU's which use  JTAG, such as  the
MPC52xx, 7xx, and 85xx families."
