7mtt is really the way to go in this situation. 7mtt is really only creating and managing the schedules for the SnapMirror TDP copy jobs from the 8.1.4P10+> destination cluster system. I’m pretty sure that it supports migrating from any 7-mode system runnin 8.1.4P10 or higher (up to 8.2.4PX) to any current GA release of ONTAP CMode (and there are tricks to make it work with newer, non-GA releases too (9.6RC1) which NetApp support can tell you about if you open a case with them (sorry, not going to disclose this on an open forum.) If you’re looking for a tertiary copy “just in case” something happens when you’re physically moving components have you considered setting up a clustered volumes ONTAP with AWS/Azure when you’re done with the cluster upgrade in the interim while the DR equipment is en-route?
