I just did a 8040 -> 8200/A220 migration doing both methods.  Some were 
moved with "vol move" and some were storage vMotion.  Total was about 150TB.

We noted no great increased latency on the VMs that were moved, but they 
were not latency sensitive workloads, and moving from HDD.
