Sorry, it is. If I want to configure my box using a serial
console (meaning: I want to enter the bios setup), then this
happens before the box booted, so it is independent of the OS.

Yes, if Linux starts up, then this will work. But it wont
work before booting the OS.

Hmmm... I know that DELL servers implement a serial
console. And the soekris boxes do as well...
