Yep, you can see the kernel messages as the system
boots. I think this is what you want.

I am using Red Hat 8.0 on a 256M Compact Flash,
but I stripped the heck out of it though. If I
get some free time, I'd like to try and load a
embedded version of Linux that runs off a ramdisk.

I'm not sure about virtual ttys. You probably need
to enable virtual console. I'm not sure if that is
a downloadable module. I would have to check. I'll
have to check. I have no use for such a thing as
long as I have ssh. :)

I know what you mean. I use my laptop to hook up
to it. In the past, I had a modem hooked up where
I could log in remotely. I haven't touched a modem
in years though. I still remember some AT commands
though. ;-)
