I can't get it to spindown that way, either.  Redhat is frequently writing
to disk, preventing it from spinning down.

It would be great if I could stop flushing and syncing of disk buffers, but
instead just don't buffer them at all; just write to disk immediately.  

Other things I fooled around with are:

noflushd - didn't seem to work.  something else was writing to the drive
anyway, keeping it spun up.

Logging daemon -  Couldn't get an improvement.

bios power management - had no effect


In the Openbrick, the processor feels like it's about to burn up all the
time.  Once I get the HDD to spin down, the next thing is the processor, how
to make it run cooler in Reshat?

I fooled around in bios. With CPU throttling after 4 sec. of idle time, it's
slightly cooler, but not much.  Seems as Redhat is keeping it hot much of
the time.
