RCM6700, DC10.70 - PPP online + SMS

We are using the RCM6700 family with DC10.70, PPP (dcrtcp.lib) via a cellular modem module. Using only the Rabbit TCP/IP stack, not the modem's. Recent applications require us to connect via PPP to the cellular APN and stay online (opening and closing sockets to send data), while also being able to accept incoming SMS commands. 
 Is there a recommended mechanism for intercepting the incoming TCP/IP data stream to trap and detect an SMS? (I know how, via AT commands, to make the modem forward SMS while online) .
