You're right. It works and well works without backslashes.
In the past I used a classical compiler and I think that the backslash was mandatory for the compiler to set all lines as one, since it is a single instruction. If no backslash was there, lines were considered as single and then "syntax error" were produced on each line. It seems that this compiler is hopely more friendly.

That is definitively the good solution.
