Yes you can telnet as root, no you don't need a password.

sync means execute the command 'sync' at the command prompt.  It makes sure that
outstanding file changes are written to disk.

That should be reboot your HD1000, not you PC

Be careful, if you do this improperly then you will need to connect to you
HD1000 via serial or perform a formatup to restore your hd1000's network
settings.
