Yes, the LinkStation can be expanded by connection of an external USB 2.0 drive. However, it's likely that you will not be able to write to it until you reformat the drive. Also, while the LinkStation offers username/password and group-level security for the shared folders residing on its internal drive, it doesn't have any security facilities for the USB 2.0 connected drive. It also allows manual or automatic backup of the internal drive to the external one, but if the internal folders are secured, your security has just been breached. The LinkStation is worthwhile as a fast unsecured network storage device with a lousy web interface and many documentation errors. I use it with my Roku. I hope more thought went into the product than went into the management interface and user manuals. Both read like a bad fortune cookie. No firmware updates yet from Buffalo. I haven't tried the printer sharing features.
