Mixing the two will slow down the "g" devices. But you can run both a "g"
network and a "b" network, each on their own channel, and interconnect the "g"
and "b" access points with a hard wire connection. Then the "g" network only
has "g" devices using it, and will run at full speed.

What performance should I expect?
54g products will perform differently depending on whether or not there is
802.11b traffic in the immediate environment. The rules-of-thumb for throughput
are: In an 802.11g-only environment, throughput will be between 4-5 times the
throughput of an 802.11b network. The maximum throughput can exceed 24 Mbps. In
an environment that includes 802.11b devices, throughput will be about double
the throughput of an 802.11b network. The maximum throughput can exceed 10
Mbps. In addition, all 54g radios have better sensitivity than current 802.11b
radios, and 54g provides outstanding coverage in its 802.11b compatible mode.
