I basically agree with you except this customer ( a major airplane maker) is trying to put component inputs onto an a/c that uses CRT and composite and will use LCD to replace the CRT and  upgrade to component distribution to the LCDS. They are testing in their "lab", the LCD using the old Pioneer DVD player. 

To be fair to them, they are now in the process of getting another DVD player to use. The confusion factor is the fact that the Pioneer works with a Panasonic plasma; but not withe the LCDs. 

The reason I went looking for a spec is that anticpating the outcome of what is happening led me to conclude that I better be on good ground when and if I am forced to handle the issue from a different perspective. (contractural).

I find it really amazing that there does not seem to be an "authority" for one of  today's most used video interface.
