what's the point of art pack?

i must be missing something, but what's the point of an art pack?
is there something special about it that can't be done with some
ecp commands?

i notice that the sample art pack contains "backup" code
in case artpacker isn't found that does the obvious:
/usr/local/bin/photo -p &
sleep 2
/usr/local/bin/ecp photoApp SLIDESHOW .
/usr/local/bin/ecp photoApp FIT_MODE fit
/usr/local/bin/ecp photoApp INFO_MODE short
/usr/local/bin/ecp photoApp SET_DELAY 10000
/usr/local/bin/mp3player --obeyphoto ./*.mp3 &

what does artpacker do that the above code doesn't do?
