That's interesting. I've something similiar. A character LCD (40x4) with an USB-Interface is connected to my net6501. When the net6501 does not boot or is completly dead, I can see the status LED of my LCD flashing. Like your ethernet diodes. Normally, the LED does never flash, but is turned on all time, when it's connected via USB.

I am using Gentoo Linux. My "updates" meant, that I am justing updating my linux kernel and have to restart. Nothing special IMHO. And yes, this was working before fine.
