I looked at my mame setup, and my rom files for the CoCo 3 emulation (I 
have several all in the roms folder, so that I can do different machine 
types/configs as needed/if needed), each is a zip file. Not uncompressed.

However, this is with a not-so-young version of mame, running on a 
not-so-young installation of Ubuntu (22.04 LTS)...

So...maybe try 'em zipped?
