  I will try to answer your questions as follows;
  1) i have not used CCs before but was instructed that the ti sample program was incorrect, which I fixed and got it to work.
  2) the part number was misremembered mashup between microchip and ti parts.
  3) I am using the ti supplied, usb connected, programmer and the FET board.
  4)I am most comfortable with assembly code and i have a copy of IAR but where are the header files you mentioned located in the ti doc files.
  5) the file you sent is in rar? format that windows does not understand. 
  Mike, I've never used CCS, but use IAR since it does unlimited size assembler for free. 

  I don't know what an 24F169 is, but assume you mean the MSP430F169. What is your board setup? are you using the FET board with ZIF socket or an EVK of some kind?

  Can you communicate with the device via JTAG? it seems not if you can't download the blinky LED routine.

  I don't know of any reference books on the compilers other than the vendors, and the IAR one comes free. I is Ok I guess if you haven't used an assembler before, or an IDE, but I've never done more than glance at it as I find the IDE (mostly) quite intuitive, and, where not intuitive obvious once you raise HELP.

  To allow for the blinky LED program running on different parts you will need to load the right header file.

  The sequence I use is:-

  New workspace.
  Create new project as asm.
  Then delete the provided asm base file and provide your own. via PROJECT - ADD FILE

  I usually call mine xx_SHELL.S43.

  I have SENT A COMPLETE PROJECT BASED ON THE 2013 TO YOUR PRIVATE EMAIL. tHIS PROGRAM IS A BIT LIKE THE BLINKER BUT IT  was done for a friend to show him just how fast and short you could generate pulses on an MSP430, so scope needed to view it, or increase the 2 constants until the LED becomes visible (an excercise in checking LED visibility parameters too. You WILL need to change the included header file to match the part you are using. If you have an SBW dongle laying around it will run directly on that. In fact as long as the port addresses are correct,  it will run on any MSP430 part, as it is very basic.

        I have just joined the msp430 group and am having trouble finding correct info on programming one of the chips in the set. 24F169 64 pin device and have not had much luck programming the BLINKER demo (partially because the pin outs in the example are for the wrong port). Do you know of a good reference book on using  the CCS compiler under Windows XP or a suitable replacement such as IAR? I am not concerned wheather it is supported or not as long as it is workable in assembly code. Any help or descriptions of problem areas would be highly appreciated.
