gcc is a frontend for the compiler, preprocessor and linker. The
linker is creating the final binary so only the linker (should be
called msp430-ld or msp430-elf-ld) knows how much and what parts of
the memory are acutally used. The linker is told by a linker command
file where to put data, read-only data, code and so on, if you want to
user more space than available the linker will complain. If you want
to know the exact memory consumption you can tell the linker to
generate a map file, this can be done by the options '-M' (print the
mapfile to stdout) or '-Map <FILE>' (print the mapfile to file
<FILE>).

There is another program in your gnu-toolchain, it should be called
msp430-objcopy or msp430-elf-objcopy, it helps to convert binary
images. For information invoke this program with the parameter
'--help'
