While the quality of the Digital to Analog decoding is important, what's
FAR more important is the quality of the analog signal path handling the
audio after conversion.

In most "consumer" CD players, the analog stage comprises a couple of
ICs. Dedicated DACs tend to be designed for the so-called audiophile
market, and thus tend to have a bit more attention paid to the analog
stage.

So.... a nice DAC results in nice sound.
