I'd say choosing 96 as your target RMS dB is the problem. Here is a sample RMS history of how CDs have been mastered over the years: 1987: RMS 89 1995: RMS 94 2001-2005: RMS 98 MP3Gain defaults to 89 out of the box. At 89, most tracks will have no clipping introduced by MP3Gain because most CDs will have their volumes lowered rather than raised. Only CDs that have their volumes raised are in danger of clipping. I usually shoot for 93-94 db RMS, and for older CDs, I rip to WAV and then use Steinberg Loudness Maximizer (a compressor/limiter) to boost the dB up a bit before encoding to MP3. I've found this to be a good tradeoff, using the available CD bandwidth to good effect, but still preserving virtually all of the dynamics of the source recording. Of course, you also have to take into account the type of music you are listening to. I might make sure a Rock recording has an average RMS of 94, whereas an accoustic guitar CD might be a couple dbs lower at 91 or 92.
