Hi,
I bought and installed the Photobridge a few weeks ago. I want something
with video capability, and plan on moving my Audiotron from the living room
to my bedroom. The fact that the Roku didn't require PC software was a
must as well.
Out-of-the-box, the Photobridge is kinda limited in its capabilites. Roku
came out with a beta v2 OS which gave it the ability to read plain 'ole
MPEG2 files, which was missing from the production OS, and was important to
me.
The interface is unimpressive. There's no way that I can see to select
multiple files across multiple directories for MP3 playback at the console.
Your only choices are playlists (like the Audiotron), one at a time, or
start from a particular file or folder and it will continue from that
point. There are third party apps that supposedly solve that problem,
providing a more "WinAMP" like interface, but they don't yet work with the
new OS. The same limitation exists with video and photo viewing.
The good news is that sound quality is good, even though I'm using RCA
patch cable connections. The digital out is SP/DIF and I'm set up for
TOSLINK (like the Audiotron), so I'll need to purchase a SP/DIF to TOSLINK
adapter. Video playback is generally good, though the audio and video
occasionally get out of sync. Photo display quality on my ten year old
non-HDTV 27" tube set is excellent, and should be even better when I
eventually go HDTV.
Overall, the Roku is not fully baked yet. OS upgrades and third-party apps
will likely make it a more satisfactory product over time, but as is it's
more suitable for those of us who enjoy tinkering and upgrading their
hardware rather than someone looking for a perfect product out of the box.
I definitely regret that Turtle Beach didn't go forward with a Mediatron as
I'm confident that the end result would have been as effective as the
Audiotron.

Seems like the Audiotron might have found its predecessor, at least as
far as the server software requirements are concerned: The Roku
Photobridge <http://www.rokulabs.com/products/photobridge/index.php>
supports SMB shares and does not appear to require special server
software, and comes with an open (Linux) API.
Has anybody already seen or tried the Photobridge? Opinions?
