I tend to use the max-noclip for album facility. While I appreciate that
this doesn't take into account how loud things "sound", it does provide
the maximum dynamic range in the analogue domain.

I use this for in-car (Sony CDX-757 MP3 CD changer) and at home on the
Audiotron, which feeds an Arcam Black Box 50 offboard DAC, with the
second Audiotron feeding into the digital input of a Yamaha AV amplifier
(DSP-AX620). It's surprising how many modern CD recordings actually clip
without correction!
