CIFS/SMB is just a protocol, not a file system. And really, SMB is a
proprietary Microsoft creation as well. Although people have managed to
reverse engineered it, much like NTFS.

NTFS is the proprietary file system.  CIFS/SMB is universal.  :)

Anyway, I am looking for a NAS.  If a simple USB external enclosure is
all you're looking for there are numerous inexpensive alternatives out
there.
