The I/OData unit looks like a good fit. From the documentation, it looks
like it does what I need:

Plays WAV files
Has a digital output (looks like a coax digital out too)

However, looks like it needs the TV interface -- no UI of its own. And
it also appears to need PC/server side bits to run. Two quick questions
with regard to the latter. Are there restrictions on where the server
side app can run? For instance, could I run the server side app on a
machine that has only network access to media files (files stored on
shares not physically attached to the box running the app -- NAS or
shared drive)? And second, must the PC software remain resident during
the operation of the Player (streaming music, for instance, to a home
theater sound system)? Must it remain resident at all times? What does
the server software actually do? Is it limited to moving things to a
designated folder/staging area, or is it playing a more active role
during media playback?

Tell you why I ask, I experimented with a little box from HP not long
ago that did some of the same sorts of things. It too required software
on the PC. That software remained resident sucking up cycles every time
a change was made to media file folders it was aware of. The HP media
box itself was useless without it. It destabilized the system generally,
and was particularly annoying upon system startup as it insisted on
re-indexing my media files each and every time (over 200GB of music).

While my Audiotron has been a little temperamental, the fact that it
could run without any active process on the PC side has been a redeeming
feature.

Thank you for your thoughts.

anybody have experience with one of these?

With the built-in 10/100M Network (Wireless 802.11b network ready).
Audio
and Video files can be stored in a PC running Windows XP, acting as an
AV
jukebox. The included software also allows V880N to play back Web Radio
and
synchronize with Apple iTunes (TM).
