The Argosy doesn't require a PC to serve songs to the AT. You hang it off your hub/switch.

The main advantages of a NAS that come to mind are small footprint, low power consumption, low noise, and no OS updates required. And for myself, I cannot stuff another HD in my server. Plus, I think a NAS is just cool. :)

Thanks for the TOC, can't wait to try it out.

Clueless question about the Argosy, do you still have to have your main
PC on in order to have the AT hit the Argosy. And if so, is there any
external HD or NAS that the AT can hit without having to have the main
PC on?

Also, what's the advantage of the Argosy or any NAS over just installing
(if you have the space) another internal HD?

Thanks!

You can find my Argosy-tolerant TOC maker here:

www.frozennorth.com/downloads/SharpTOC.zip

I call it SharpTOC because I wrote it in C#. Eh, a rose by any other
name...

I've only tested this on my home network. Most of my files reside on a
Windows 2000 server and the rest on the Argosy HD-363N. It seems to
work reasonably fast (except when hitting the Argosy). I don't have
support for firmware upgrades or playlists yet, but it should handle
MP3, WMA, and WAV files. I use AudioStation 6 for ripping my WAVs, so
it does read AudioStation 6 WAV tags.

Unzip the files and run SETUP.EXE. The default installation directory
is C:\Program Files\FrozenNorth\SharpTOC. This is important to note
because it doesn't create a START menu item. I don't have time to
figure out how to do that yet, but I'd like to get that feature in there
eventually. Navigate to the installation folder and run SharpTOC.EXE.

Enter a share name and click the ADD button. Enter as many shares as
you like. When you're done, click the Generate TOC button and let
SharpTOC do its magic.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were a few bugs in this code, but it
seems to be working great for me and the important thing is that my
Argosy HD-363N is now serving it's intended purpose as a 300G NAS music
share.

If anyone tries this program and finds a bug, let me know and I just
might fix it. I'll share the source if there is any interest.

Enjoy.
