IEEE International Conference on Development and Learning (ICDL 2026) Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan Apologies for cross-posting. === Important dates - working CFP timeline === Submission deadline: July 31, 2026 Notification of acceptance: August 14*, 2026 Camera-ready deadline: August 28, 2026 Workshop date and time: September 15, 2026 - 13:45-17:05 *Submissions will be reviewed progressively as they are received, following a first-come-first-served basis, to guarantee enough time for early contributors to plan their trip to the conference. Workshop website: https://sites.google.com/view/aicogdev-workshop === Abstract === The convergence of learning and development in the design of robust, adaptive cognitive agents is imperative. However, Developmental Robotics/AI and Cognitive Architectures have had limited intersection to date. This half-day workshop aims to close this gap by fostering meaningful discussion across the communities associated with these topics. The workshop's primary objective is to facilitate new connections between young researchers, sharing early results and concepts, and renowned experts in the field. The format emphasizes dynamic exchange, with succinct presentations that leave ample time for questions and discussion. Participants may submit extended abstracts or position papers. Accepted works will be presented during oral and poster sessions, and a culminating panel discussion with presenters will further explore synergies between Developmental Robotics/AI and Cognitive Architectures. === Motivation === Humans are highly adaptable, not because of a fixed set of exceptional skills, but because they continuously acquire new competencies as needed. Human learning and development therefore provides an important source of inspiration for technologies that interact and coexist with people, including social robots and virtual agents. Particular effort should be put in pushing these solutions outside the research lab and into the real world, taking its dynamics and complexities into account during the design process. Workshop Objectives: * Examine the role of developmental principles, such as sensorimotor learning, curiosity-driven exploration, and social interaction, in the design of intelligent robotic systems. * Showcase innovative work in cognitive robotics that integrates developmental approaches. * Identify key challenges and open research questions to guide future work in this interdisciplinary field. * Foster collaborations between AI researchers, engineers, roboticists, psychologists, and neuroscientists. Building on the 2024 and 2025 editions of AI:CogDev, the workshop seeks to reopen discussion on Developmental Cognitive Architectures for robotics, and to create space for experts and young researchers to exchange perspectives and build new collaborations. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Cognitive Architectures applied to real or simulated embodiments * Developmental Learning and Developmental Robotics * Symbol grounding and concept emergence in autonomous systems * Active and Interactive Learning * Embodiment and affordance learning in autonomous systems * Open-ended reinforcement learning and Intrinsically Motivated learning * Ethical and trust considerations of developmental agents in real-world scenarios * Brain- or psychologically inspired development and computational intelligence === Call for Contributions === We invite participants to submit contributions that foster discussion of learning, particularly at the intersection of Cognitive Architectures and Developmental AI, with a focus on robotics applications. Submissions may be either extended abstracts of 2 to 4 pages or short position papers of 1 page. * Extended abstracts (2 to 4 pages) * Short position papers (1 page) Beyond state-of-the-art research papers, we encourage works in progress, preliminary results, critical reflections, and position papers. This inclusive format is intended to identify novel discussion points that authors may address during the poster session and panel discussion. Submissions will be collected in PDF format through the workshop website. Accepted submissions will be presented during the poster session, and selected contributions may be invited for brief oral presentation.
