Call for Participation
We invite researchers, practitioners, civic-tech organisations,=20
municipal participation officers, and software providers to join our=20
full-day workshop on *Agency and Digital Participation in Urban Space*=20
at Mensch und Computer 2026 in Duisburg-Essen. The workshop addresses=20
the question: How do citizens, city planners, municipalities, and=20
civic-tech organisations experience and exercise agency when digital=20
technologies mediate participation in urban planning?
The extended list of topics includes but not limited to:
* Agency in different participation technologies (AR, VR, MR, mobile)
* Bidirectional permeability between municipalities and citizens
* UX design for attractive and accessible participation tools
* Expectation management through visualisation techniques
* Showcase of prototypes and tools for digital participation
* Forms of activation for citizen participation
* Interplay of different media (e.g., interactive tables, AR, VR)
* Interaction with planning data in participatory settings
* Perspectives of citizens, city planners, and municipalities
There are three ways to participate:
*(1)**Paper submission:* Submit a workshop paper of up to 4 pages=20
(excluding references) in the ACM single-column format via ConfTool=20
(https://www.conftool.pro/muc2026/). Accepted papers will be presented=20
in the morning session and published in the GI Digital Library.=20
Deadline:*17 July 2026, AoE.*
*(2)**Creative submission:* Creative submissions may take the form of a=20
talk proposal, an interactive prototype, a student project, or a=20
case/open question for the group brainstorming session. Talk proposals=20
and prototypes will receive a 10-minute presentation slot; cases and=20
open questions can be submitted via form=20

Deadline for creative submissions (extended): *15 August 2026, AoE*.
*(3)**Without submission:* Register directly for the workshop =E2=80=94 n=
o prior=20
submission is required. We particularly encourage practitioners,=20
municipal staff, and civic-tech organisations to join the discussion and=20
collaborative activities.
All participants of the workshop would be encouraged to consider=20
organising a joint publication or special issue with the outcomes of the=20
workshop.
At least one author of each accepted paper/creative submission must=20
attend the workshop on-site and register for at least one day of the=20
