The 21st British National Conference on Databases
will take place at Heriot-Watt University from
7th-9th July 2004. As a precursor to the Conference
we propose to run a Doctoral Consortium on
Tuesday 6th July, and to that end we are now sending
this call for papers.

The Doctoral Consortium will provide an opportunity
for up to ten PhD students, selected on the basis of
their paper submissions, to present their work to
a panel of three respected academics in the database
field, and their fellow students. The objective is to
obtain feedback and advice on their research, in terms
of methodology, relevance and novelty, and on their
presentation skills, to aid in conference and viva
presentations.

Submissions should be in pdf format, 2 pages including
references, based on the Springer document format

Submissions should consist of the pdf document
and the original Word or Latex files, in a zip file,
by email to [email protected] by Friday 28th May.

Submissions will be refereed by the panel on the basis
of the quality of the work and relevance to the conference,
see the conference themes on the main website

However, the panel will also seek to ensure a balance
of PhD experience within the group, so students early in their
PhD should not feel discouraged from applying. While we
would not wish to discourage research groups from putting
forward more than one student, we will try to provide
an even balance of opportunity throughout the community,
so it is unlikely that multiple students from one group
would be accepted.

The Doctoral Consortium is subsidised by BNCOD, so there
will be no fees for the Consortium, and facilities, coffees
and lunches will be provided free of charge. However, travel
and accommodation costs will have to be met for the student
either personally or through their Institution. A reduced
fee for the conference proper will be made available to
accepted Doctoral Consortium students, and we are currently in
negotiation with the British Computer Society to obtain
support for further fee reduction.
