"Unroll your Ideas": a work-in-progress meeting of the Psychology of
Programming Interest Group (PPIG)  Workshop

Background

Many researchers on psychology of programming and related issues find it
difficult to develop their ideas because they are working in isolation,
and because the literature is widely scattered. PPIG aims to bring
together people working in a variety of disciplines and to break down
cross-disciplinary barriers. Despite its name PPIG entertains a broad
spectrum of research approaches, from theoretical perspectives drawing
on psychological theory to empirical perspectives grounded in real-world
experience, and is equally concerned with all aspects of programming and
software engineering, from the design of programming languages to
communication issues in software teams, and from computing education to
high-performance professional practice.

Objectives
This informal workshop is intended to foster exchange of ideas and
constructive suggestions for research in progress. Doctoral students and
more experienced researchers will be equally welcome. In order to allow
ample discussion in round-table style, numbers will be limited.

Presentations should aim not so much to convince the audience that it is
good research, but to elicit help in teasing out answers to knotty
research problems.

Workshop Format
The workshop will be over two days. On the first day the workshop will
start at 13:00 with registration and sandwich lunch and finish at 18:00.
In the evening, there will be an opportunity to socialise at a local
hostelry.

The second day will begin at 9:00 and finish at 17:00 with coffee breaks
and sandwich lunch.

The general format of the workshop will be a series of presentations by
researchers followed by a discussion session with the discussants. The
discussants will include Thomas Green, Maria Kutar and Marian Petre. We
hope there will also be an invited speaker in the area of Computer
Science Education.


Location
The colloquium will be held on the Jubilee Campus of the University of
Nottingham, which has won many awards for its design and environmental
features. Nottingham is centrally located in the UK, and is easily
reachable by car (via junctions 25 and 26 of the M1), train (via
Nottingham Railway Station) and plane (via Nottingham East Midlands
Airport).

Call for papers

Intending participants are requested to notify their intention to attend
as soon as possible, preferably by supplying a short (half-page)
abstract, to be followed by an extended abstract of 2-4 pages. The
extended abstract should be submitted by 1 November to allow time for
review - we shall aim to be inclusive but we may have to limit numbers
of acceptances. Accepted abstracts will be posted on the web in advance
of the meeting to allow participants to read and reflect on them. Please
supply the extended abstract in PDF format to [email protected].
