Realizing the true burden: - Statistics from a country like England where health cost are a state responsibility show
that Tobacco is the single most common cause of premature death. (120,000 out of 56.2 million Britons die every year
due to tobacco related diseases). Extrapolating these figures to work a global burden we have at hand a burden of 13
million tobacco-induced deaths instead of 4.9 million. Further accepting the fact that health status of more than 4.5
billion people is twice worse than that in the 1st World we are faced with an approximate burden of 25 million deaths
a year, which we thought, would be true only in 2030.

Role of Awareness and Prevention: - Evidence is also emerging that educational levels and awareness does not play an
effective role in curbing the use of tobacco. For example at the highest level of education in Japan 57 % males and 37
% females - school and college going student who are 18 yrs old- do smoke. Hence alternate tools to public education
and increased awareness of the ill effects of tobacco must be developed for an effective tobacco prevention or
cessation program.

Industrial Onslaught: -Tobacco cultivation yields maximal profits with limited layout. It is thus financially unviable
for the industry to initiate any action that leads to a reduction in production or utilization of Tobacco especially
when it is so easily possible to dump it from now relatively tobacco free 1st World to the 3rd World countries.
