Design for Democracy Contract Full/Part-time Usability Researchers Design for Democracy is a not-for-profit organization that increases participation in the civic experience. Social research and design professionals collaborate to create clearer, more understandable, easier to accomplish, and trustworthy interactions between the government and the governed. Currently, we seek three (3) qualified usability researchers for projects related to improving the effectiveness of voting ballots interfaces, polling place signage, and the national voter registration form. Design for Democracy has immediate full and/or part time contract positions for: 1. Lead usability researcher across ballot, signage, and voter registration card design in Chicago 2. Sr. usability researcher for polling place signage design 3. Usability researcher for national voter registration form design Responsibilities - Lead usability researcher * Manage and advise other usability researchers across teams * Research ballot design guidelines and regulations * Work with advisory board of community and industry specialists * Determine evaluation criteria for ballot interface best practices * Conduct usability evaluations in contextual and laboratory settings (including writing test protocols, conducting the tests and reporting on test results) * Collaborate on best practices guidelines to accompany the design templates Qualifications - Lead usability researcher: * Professional focus on usability of forms, signage and other printed materials and an understanding of information design principles. * At least 6 year's professional experience in usability evaluations, including both formal laboratory testing as well as contextual observation. * At least 2 year's managing small research teams. * Experience working in government or other regulatory environments, or work on a project with a formal advisory committee, is a plus. * Must be located in the Chicago area. This is a full-time contract position. Responsibilities - Senior usability researcher * Research polling place signage design guidelines and regulations * Work with advisory board of community and industry specialists * Determine evaluation criteria for polling place signage best practices * Collaborate on best practices guidelines to accompany the design templates Qualifications - Senior usability researcher: * Professional focus on usability of forms, signage and other printed materials and an understanding of information design principles. * At least 4 year's professional experience in usability evaluations, including both formal laboratory testing as well as contextual observation. * Experience working in government or other regulatory environments, or work on a project with a formal advisory committee, is a plus. * Location is open with a general preference for the New Orleans area of Louisiana, New York City, Chicago, or Washington DC. This is a part-time contract position. This is a part-time contract position. Qualifications - All candidates: The ideal candidate will also have skills in plain language or clear communications, design for older adults, accessibility and information design as well as experience writing design guidelines. This project will be conducted using small teams with graphic designers and usability researchers: the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment is essential. The usability researcher must be able to plan and complete their own work on the project, and effectively communicate to executive management.
