Liz,
Because GAIN website adheres to the design rules for the other AIGA online
pubs, navigation looks familiar. But the articles are different in kind and
exist in different categories. This makes the familiar navigational rules
potentially misleading. GAIN isn't CLEAR, for example: the articles
aredifferent in content and meaning.
This potential mismatch occurs each time a new journal is added to the AIGA
collection.
The articles are high quality, but what about some non-designer-authored
articles, outsider points of view? The current articles are mostly
self-reflection and self-reference in the published articles (which less
generously can be called "navelgazing"). There's less in the how-to
articles and more in the how-can-we-do-things-better articles, which
portends a lot of upstream swimming.
I enjoy very much the interdisciplinary quality of GAIN, which lifts the
issue of holistic design out of the web-service mire. Very cool.
Bob
