[Sigia-l] UXCampNE (note, it is now North East and not NYC) following up

Just coming back from the IA Summit, I did a bit of talking up of
BarCamp (see barcamp.org) and more specifically my idea for a barCamp
styled event this year on the NE side of the the Continental US.

I got some great energy and enthusiasm from people, and wanted to make
sure that some basic information about BarCamping was out there for
folks. As noted above the real details are on the BarCamp Wiki.

Ok, here's the dealio ...

BarCamp - Think of this as open source conference.
* no financial commitments to attend
* everyone who attends presents or helps out in another way. NO LURKERS
* it happens organically and by brute will. Waiting for someone to do
a BarCamp for you, means you end up without a BarCamp.
* Accommodations (when necessary), the floor of the venue, your
sleeping bag, your pillow. - Oh! that's why it is a "camp"?
*  Before the camp you tell people what you are planning on presenting
on the wiki
*  when you arrive at the camp, you sign up for a slot.
* food is donated (pretty easy to do w/ such a small group actually).

How does a BarCamp happen? who's in charge?
Well to be honest, I don't know who "owns" the wiki. I'm assuming it
is donated by a passionate barcamper. But the reality after that
donation is that all you need to do to create a camp is to go to the
wiki and create a page and announce it onto the world. It's that easy!
If you want it, make it. If you want to help go to the page and start
helping.

So that leads me back to our UXCamp thingy. I tried to do this in NYC
and that didn't work b/c of the #1 problem w/ BarCamps--finding a
space that will accommodate its needs (especially the camp like needs;
i.e. must allow about 50-100 strangers to stay overnight on the
weekend). So we are now looking at either DC or Philly with some
possibilities but help in this regard would greatly be appreciated.

And this leads me to the last point. For anyone interested in
participating in the camp, go to http://barcamp.org/UXCampNYC (I
haven't figured out how to change the name yet) and sign up and well
start doing. No need to wait for me!!!!!

There is an RSS feed for the barcamp.org wiki and you can be alerted
to any relevant changes.

OH! when? I'm personally thinking June. But that's me. Got an idea,
join the wiki community and let us know what you think. It's all good!

So I hope others will jump into the fray and I'm sorry for the major
x-posting, but thought this really effected us all and these are "my
all". Feel free to spread this to your ALL if you think relevant, but
be nice.

Enjoy! and happy camping. I hope other communities in the UX sphere
figure this out too. It really does work.
