I have certainly heard of visual thinking or visual sensemaking, though that
often involves sketching rapidly to understand a phenomenon or your
thinking.  I'm sure you'll find decent amount of things if you google those
you'll find some good references.  Certainly Bill Verplank talks a lot about
this, and in fact this week he's teaching a course on that at the summer
school I'm attending.  He credits McKim for for much of his technique.
